in making decisions that could affect Nigeria's
future? Naij.com was contacted by Prince
Daniel C.D. Onyemaka, President, Youths
Across Nigeria (YAN), who is concerned about
lack of involvement of Nigerian youths in
Nigerian affairs.
"Any country whose youths are apathetic to the
destination it's heading to should be described as a
country with no tomorrow. And it's such a shame
that Nigerian youths are not encouraged to be
involved in Nigeria's affairs.
"Not only have Nigerian youths of today sold their
conscience and tied their fate to the apron string of
melancholy, they also are hammering nails into the
lid of the coffin where their ambitions as future
leaders are buried.
"Current security threats Nigeria is facing have
paited us as a nation in a state of debacle. Nothing
or little positive has come out of security measured
imposed in various parts of Nigeria. Obviously, the
people who know all about the genesis of the tragic
occurrences are also the ones to sabotage any
rescue exercise.
"Lo! The President obtained his nomination from for
the second term same day Mubi was snatched by
Boko Haram and the villagers deserted their homes
for safety.
"The fact that hundreds of Chibok girls are still
being held captive by Boko Haram is no longer
considered an issue in Nigeria. As the 2015 general
and presidential elections loom nearer, Nigeria's
newspapers are far more focused on current political
news and campaigns. We live in an era when news
spread like wildfire, and people are happy to do
whatever it takes to accumulate attention even for
five precious minutes. Those individuals whom we
voted into their political offices, who had sworn to
protect our sovereignty, lives and properties, threw
our hopes away. I weep for my fatherland.
"It is apparent without the help of soothsayers that
the present government, the President Goodluck
Jonathan-led administration, is unable to secure a
decent future for Nigerian youths. Our youths
remain stranded at a particular junction of rigmarole
they are walking round in a circle.
"The President has turned a blind eye to the
corruption practices. This is affecting most his
concern of Nigerian youths' participation in Nigeria's
politics and development. Our President is
surrounded by charlatans and sychophants who
continue gathering grains from our national
resources even when they don't need it.
"Even the office of the Special Assistant to Mr.
President on job creation, which is headed by
Josephine Washima, is just an office where she
gathers her associates to spend their whole day
discussing irrelevant issues and gallivanting without
positive daily outcome.
"Rather than offering plans of revival, the corrupt
rogues we have as leaders have embarked on their
normal practical theory of stimulus control, a
situation whereby the lives of the Nigerian youths
are made so hard they have to beg for crumbs from
the tables of our corrupt and unreasonable
politicians. They make you beg for bread, and,
because of their inordinate ambition, you end up
becoming perpetual slave to their dastardly acts of
inhumanity.
"Professor Wole Soyinka was right when he said,
"The youth of this generation is dead on arrival".
The bells of political jingles are ringing boisterously
on every corner, and, again, Nigerian youths are the
main target of this public show of shame and
idolatry sagacity.
"Where do we go from here? Our states are flooded
with campaign posters of various political aspirants,
but every single issue in Nigeria remains
unattended. We are a country filled with "acclaimed
visionary leaders" who have no values, no vision,
and no shame.
"Selling your soul to the PDP, or the APC,
participating in their rallies and campaigns, is not a
guarantee of your tomorrow. Instead, one should
ask: what structures and qualitative manifestos do
they have on ground? They made the youths to be
spectators of their shameful display of inept
manifestation of their indoor agreement and urge
them to take up arms against their political
opponent.
"The average Nigerian youth is only concerned with
the instant gratification of self-fulfillment. He or she
doesn't think of the aftermath of self assertion.
"How long will it take the Nigerian youths to refocus
and redirect their steps onto the rightful track?
"The destiny of Nigerian youths is in their hands.
Their tomorrows are intertwined with their attitude
of ignorance. Their persistent I-don't-care attitude is
sealing their doom. Much like Esau in the Bible, a lot
of Nigerian youths have sold their birthright and
destiny to a plate of jello rice with fried fish.
"I lament because I also am a youth. I weep for the
impudience of Nigerian youths who continue
robbing themselves of their future. How did we get
this far following the wrong path?
"These abnormalities will continue to prevail unless
Nigerian youths wake up from their slumber, rise to
their feet and redirect their destinies by saying No
to the vices of our so-called leaders. Only Nigerian
youths can liberate Nigeria!"
