Customs redeploys Airport Commander, re-opens bonded warehouses

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has
redeployed its Airport Commander, Mr. Taju
Olanrewaju following the crisis between the
service and clearing agents that paralysed
the cargo section of the nation's airports for
over two weeks.
This is as the NIS yesterday announced the
reopening of the bonded warehouses of the
Nigerian Aviation Handling Company,
NAHCO, Plc and the Skyway Aviation
Handling Limited, SAHCOL.
Our correspondent gathered that Olanrewaju
was on Monday summoned to Abuja by the
Customs' Comptroller-General, Alhaji
Abdullahi Inde Dikko to explain his role in the
entire crisis.
Our correspondent gathered that after the
meeting, Olanrewaju was redeployed from
the port and immediately replaced by one Mr.
F.F Adegoke who assumed office on Tuesday,
but attended his first assignment yesterday
with the reopening of the bonded
warehouses.
As at the time of filing this report, it was
unclear where Olanrewaju was redeployed to
by the Customs' command.
Our correspondent observed yesterday at the
NAHCO area of the airport, that human and
vehicular movements had since increased in
the area with the usual display of identity
cards to security agents at the main entrance
as was the case since the last two weeks.
However, operation was yet to commence at
the cargo area, but a source confided in our
correspondent that full operations would
begin today.
Various security officers, including customs
and the police were still manning the gate
leading into the terminal and some offices.
A cargo operator, Mr. Shared Aiyegbusi, told
journalists that he was glad the government
reopened the terminal for normal business.
He regretted the event that led to the closure
of the cargo terminal at this particular period
of the year, hoping that such would be
avoided in the future.
He also urged parties involved in the crisis to
respect every agreements before the
reopening.
NAHCO has however, confirmed the
reopening of the warehouses by the
Comptroller- General of the Service, Alhaji
Dikko Inde Abdullahi.
NAHCO in a statement by its spokesman, Mr.
Sanya Onayoade stated that the warehouses
were reopened after Abdullahi undertook a
tour of its ultra-modern warehouse and the
tarmac where tonnes of cargoes were piled.
