The Oyo State
Police
Command
says that it has
arrested two
suspected
drug
traffickers with
646 bags of
Indian hemp,
valued at N11
million.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed
Indabawa, said this at a news conference in Ibadan
on Tuesday.
Indabawa said that the police acted on a piece of
information received from the Divisional Police
Officer (DPO) at Ogbere, Ibadan, on Nov. 29 around
9.00 p.m.
"We learnt that a consignment of weeds suspected
to be Indian hemp was packaged and already
loaded for conveyance in a truck at a cannabis
plantation at Eleja Village, near Akanran.
The
DAF
truck, marked XR 967 JJJ was intercepted and
found loaded with 646 bags of weeds suspected to
be Indian hemp.
"While the driver took off, the motor boy and a lady
were arrested.
"We are, however, working hard to arrest those
who fled on sighting the police,'' he said.
Indabawa said that it was, however, unfortunate
that drug-related cases were very rampant in the
state.
"Nevertheless, the police are ready to work with
other sister agencies, especially the National Drug
Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to tackle the
menace,'' he said.
He also reiterated the readiness of the police to
fight crime, especially as the year was coming to an
end.
"I have cancelled all official leave for DPOs until
January 2014.
"This is to make enough manpower available for
our plans to ensure hitch-free celebrations,'' he
said.
The arrested 30-year-old motor boy, however,
denied having knowledge of the crime.
"I was picked up when the truck had already been
loaded; I had no idea of what was inside the truck,''
he said.
He also said that the lady arrested with him was a
victim of circumstance who knew nothing about
the drugs.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the
lady also denied any complicity in the offence.
"I went to buy oranges in the village but I ran with
others when I started hearing gunshots.
"I was wrongly picked and accused of a crime I
knew nothing about,'' she said. (NAN)
